Mining for beginners tutorial

1. preliminaries
- train mining to 1... this should be the only dp that you ever spend on mining, because dp is very valuable and should not be wasted on skills that auto-raise.
- open the f10 screen and drag the mining icon from your skills and drop it into a quickbar... it's good to have a quickbar designated specifcally for mining... you can put your mining buff here if you're a conjurer and load the rest with axes to make quick changes when you destroy one.
- buy axes... unless you want to spend the time to go kill kobold miners. I would suggest collecting around 10-30 per hunting trip so that you can focus on mining for long periods of time. and if you're starting a new character to be your miner then buying them might not be a possibility if you're against "muling".

2. go to the Dwarf at the mining camp outside the kobold mines and open a trade window with him.

3. Starting your carreer
keep the trade window open as you mine and just dump the trash into the trade window as you go. This makes it possible to cut down on sorting time and destroying time, and this way you get money for everything that you mine to help offset the cost of axes.
By the time you're up around 50 or so skill i think you should be making enough to pay for axes plus start adding extra backpacks which you'll need for when you get serious into mining. but axes are the most important purchases for now tho.
Stay at the dwarf until your mining skill exceeds 200 at least.

4. By now you should have all your backpacks full up... i think that 10 is the limit. and your skill is over 200, so you'll want to head up north to the horseshoe shaped mountain just above Kendall Falls. on the mountainside here you'll be able to raise your skill and begin to collect a decent collection of praxite ore and gold

takes about 30 hours of gameplay to make Grandmaster, and you should wait until around 450+ before moving to mine around Morkesh in SL zone, because earlier than that the progress is insanely slow; however, if you get bored of the horseshoe mountain go ahead, you can get a decent pile of precious metals here even if it is very slow.

That's all for now, but i will add a section about organizing your packs, and am doing some research into some good hotspots at the moment.

Though the levels to move to new area listed above probably get you to GM the fastest, I must say I did not follow them. I was out of the Kobold mine area before 150 and was alternating between the ground around Morkesh and the Scythe horseshoe until about 250. After that I did all my skill raises in the area around Morkesh. The difference is that although I leveled slower, (and I thought I was still leveling just fine) the rewards were higher. I had hit Norium before 350 and was getting it regularly through the 400s. By the time I GM'd mining I had a stack of unrefined Norium. Add to that the gold (sell to NPC's for 16dengars a piece) found in the SL area (which my miner/crafter desperately needed to buy crafting materials) and I just had a hard time standing around swinging an axe anywhere else.

Someone asked me once if they needed a high lore skill to mine. You don't need any. When you refine it, it gets identified automatically. Until then there are several ways to identify ore when you get it. One way is by the XP you get. Bronze is 1, Iron is 10, Steel is 30, Praxite is 50, Khalite is 70 and Norium is 90, for each piece. Another is by the Icon in the inventory. Norium has a unique one. Gold and Praxite are the same but easily told because one is Gold ore, the other is Unrefined Ore. Silver, Iron, Steel, and Khalite share the same icon. Silver is easy to separate out, but the other three all are "unrefined ore". If you look at the cntl-i info box when you left click on one you can split them though. Iron is "dull grey", Steel is just "gray", and Khalite is "dark grey".

Remember when you head out of the Kobold mines area that you will still have to come back there to refine your ore. Its a long slow walk back from Silver Lake when you have a 30,000 encumbrance. If you are Gentry, you have your ring that at least gets you to town. If you are a 150 level summoner, you are covered as well. Otherwise don't forget to buy a Teleport Scroll at the keep. I talked to one guy who hadn't thought of that, fortunately a friend went and got him a scroll. They cost a Larn as I recall so use them wisely, but if you are mining in SL you can easily earn more than that.

The last thing I wanted to say is its a good thing for a miner to have a Weaponsmith skill. Both the miners I did were also crafters by design as well. It means that you can repair your axe. One axe lasts me nearly forever, its one less thing to worry about before I set off to Silver Lake.

Yup, I did about the same as what Kllein said - The only difference I did was mine at the dwarf till 350.

I know this is a FO guild but if you play on Hally a word of advice... Go /anon and then use the weak enemy/jump/fly trick to get somewhere inside the graveyard...if you need a better explanation Ask Brassfield.... peace out
